I am currently reading E.T.A. Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which is the work that - I think now I can reveal it - the Drosselmeyer Protocol is a reference to. (Also spelled "Drosselmeier", or "Droßelmeier" in the original German version.)
